Exotic Shorthair Kittens Are The Perfect Pets

Exotic Shorthair kittens are well-tempered, friendly, and absolutely beautiful. It is no surprise why the exotic shorthair is one of the most popular cat breeds. Similar to Persian cats, in more ways than one, read on to learn what makes these cats unique and such a wonderful companion.

Calm & Friendly

The Exotic Shorthair kitten personality can simply be described as calm and friendly. Due in part to their easy-going nature, these felines acclimate well to an apartment or household environment, and they enjoy being around kids and adults. Exotic Shorthair kittens prefer to have company, so if you have a job that requires you to be out of the house for long hours, your Exotic will be thankful for another animal companion.

More energetic than pure Persians, both Exotic Longhairs and Exotic Shorthairs enjoy playing simple games, but at the end of the day, they will just want to curl up in your lap—don’t be offended when your cat doesn’t want to cuddle in bed at night, most Exotics prefer a cool place for sleeping.

Not Overly Vocal

Exotic Shorthair & Exotic Longhair kittens are not overly vocal, but they may let out a little purr or meow on occasion. Although a very friendly kitten or cat, many are often hesitant towards strangers, at least at first. After getting to know them for even a short amount of time, most Exotics will warm up to their new friend and even want to play or cuddle on their lap.

Relaxed & Easygoing

One of the things that makes the Exotic Shorthair a lovely companion is their relaxed and easygoing attitudes. They will entertain themselves with cat toys around the house or be happy to chase a mouse on a string.
They are not considered overly rambunctious—it’s unlikely you’ll see them jumping off the walls with energy. They’re more likely to curl up in the sunlight for a nap. These cats value their alone time and are capable of being independent for a few hours, but they prefer to spend time with other people and pets. If introduced properly, the Exotic Shorthair will take very well to children, other pets (cats and dogs), and people outside their family.

They love to play with their family members and spend time with them. Your Exotic Shorthair will follow you around from room to room, just wondering what you are up to, enjoying watching you.

Exotics Love Daily Cuddles

The Exotic Shorthair will gladly spend time curled up on your lap. They will purr as you pet them, encouraging you to continue. They get along well with kids and are very tolerant, so don’t be surprised when you see them hanging around your children, soaking up all possible affection. It’s important to teach your children the best ways to interact with these cats to create mutual respect and understanding.

Exotics Are Adaptable

The Exotic Shorthair can be happy in a variety of environments. They are perfect for apartment living because they don’t need a ton of space to feel at home. As long as they are with their family, they will be content.

These cats also adapt well to meeting new people. It might not be instantaneous—but over the span of a few hours, you will likely see your Exotic Shorthair blossom and open up to new individuals in your home. While these cats do usually have a favorite person, they will be happy to get attention from anyone.

Separation anxiety

With friendliness sometimes comes separation anxiety. The Exotic Shorthair is used to being in the presence of their pet parents. They don’t take well to being left alone for a long stretch of time.

A recent study has revealed that cats bond to their humans like babies do to parents. Getting your cat their own furry friend can help ease separation anxiety when you are away. Exotic Shorthairs do well with other cats and dogs, but just having that additional support can subdue their anxiety.

Physical Attributes of Exotic Shorthair Kittens

For all intents and purposes, the Exotic Shorthair kitten has nearly all identical physical traits as a Persian kitten, except that Exotic Shorthair kittens have a shorter coat. With this said, our Exotic Longhair kitten are bred to have a midi coat length that is soft, silky and easy to care for.

If these kittens or cats had to be described using one word, that word would be ‘round.’ They have large, round eyes that are placed on their round head, which sits atop their thick, round neck and body. Even their short, stocky legs have a rounded appearance.

With such a description, it is easy to assume that most Exotic Shorthairs are overweight, and they certainly may appear so, but more often than not, this is simply an optical illusion. Exotic Shorthairs are, in fact, big-boned, and when combined with their extremely thick and plush coat, it creates a chubby appearance. This may raise the question, “Exactly how big do Exotic Shorthair cats get?” Well, these cats can weigh quite a bit—up to 15 pounds.

History of Exotic Shorthair Kittens

As far as cat breeds go, the exotic shorthair is fairly new, especially when compared to breeds that have been around for hundreds or thousands of years.

Around the 1950s, American Shorthair cat breeders began breeding their cats with Persian cats, in the hopes of getting the silver coat and green eyes of the Persian onto the American shorthair. To their surprise, they instead ended up with a bunch of shorthaired Persian cats.

This new type of cat was further bred with Russian Blues and Burmese cats, in order to get the gene for short hair. The offspring of those cats were then bred back with Persian cats, and the new breed of Exotic Shorthairs was created.
